The Confederation of African Football (CAF) rubber stamped the decision to change the date for the African Cup of Nations last week in Morocco because the timing conflicts with the European leagues who produce majority of the stars for the AFCON.

Jose Mourinho who in the past has shown his displeasure for the timing of the African Cup of Nation has supported the idea to shift the continental showpiece to June-July- the time the European leagues will be on recess.

“If that’s the change it’s perfect for us obviously,” he said. “Because it’s hard in the middle of the season to lose players like we do … It’s not good for the clubs, it’s not good for the competition, it’s not good for the players.”

“So if we can do that, if we manage to move the Africa Cup during the European break it’s a fantastic change,” Mourinho said.

The decision to play the AFCON in June-July starts in the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations which happens in 2019 in Cameroon.

Meanwhile, the participating nations for the AFCON has been expanded from 16 teams to 24 team
