Exactly 25 years ago the Maestro became the first ever BBC African Sports Star of the Year (now known as the African Footballer of the Year Award) after playing a crucial role in Olympique Marseille’s rise to European glory.

Together with the likes of Fabien Barthez, Marcel Desailly and skipper Didier Deschamps, the former Ghana international lifted the Champions League trophy in 1992.

Abedi again played a key role as Marseille romped to the Ligue 1 title, blowing away all their competitors to win a fourth successive league trophy.

He also helped the Black Stars to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1992, but was ruled out of the clash due to suspension, as Cote d’Ivoire beat Ghana on penalties to lift the trophy.

The Ghana legend later added the CAF African Footballer of the Year gong to his accolades to end the year on a high.

It is a success story that has since been echoed so many times, with Abedi Pele etching his name into the history of Ghana and African football.

In his time, very few could be compared to Abedi as he dazzled the world with his speed, pace and trickery.

Unfortunately, though, Ghana has not been able to produce a player as good as the Maestro in these past 25 years.
