President Akufo-Addo to unveil Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on December 10

The Tamale Sports Stadium is set to be named after the late Vice President of the Republic of Ghana

Ghana will mark the 5 anniversary of the death of Alhaji Aliu Mahama who was the Vice President under President John Agyakum Kuffour led government and as part of immortalizing him for the great service to the nation, the Tamale Sports Stadium has been named after him.

The Chairman of the Aliu Mahama Foundation (AMF), Gabby Otchere –Darko speaking on how the North has been deprived at the launch of the fifth anniversary celebrations of the passing of the Vice president in Accra said people of the Northern parts of the country have been stigmatized as poor, less educated and underdeveloped than the people of the South.

According to him, as part of the celebrations there will be a fund –raising and auction of the works of the late vice president in support of the education and training of some ‘Kayayei’ in collaboration with Council for Technical Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) for the girls who migrate from the north to Accra in search of better opportunities.

Aliu Mahama served on the board of Real Tamale United (RTU), the biggest club in the Northern part of the country, hence the announcement of rechristening the sports facility after him has been embraced by all and sundry.

The government of Ghana in 2005 started renaming the various sports facility after people who have contributed to the growth of sports in the country.

The Kumasi Sports Stadium and the Accra ports Stadium were renamed the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, respectively.
