Ghana’s poorest start to World Cup qualifiers since 2002 campaign

The Black Stars realized just a point from three games in the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and that is Ghana’s worst start.

The Black Stars have been rocked bottom of group E of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers of the African zone, after they were held to a one all draw by Congo in Kumasi on Friday.

Ghana began the campaign in Tamale and the Cranes of Uganda gave their high flying opponents a shock by settling for a goalless draw, before they were edged 2-0 by Egypt.

The last time Ghana had a poor start to the World Cup qualifiers was the 2002 elimination stage- The Black Stars lost their opener 1-3 at home to Liberia, before they were beaten by Sudan in an away tie and returned home just to get a point against Nigeria.

The 2002 World Cup qualifiers remains Ghana’s worst start since the inception of the group stage in the 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
