On Monday January 2, Ghana coach Avram Grant named a provisional squad of 26 men for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held in Gabon this month.

The Israeli is expected to prune down the list to the mandated 23 today, Wednesday January 3, as the deadline for the submission of squads looms.

Pulse Sports takes you through a list of three payers who are likely to miss the flight to Gabon.

1. Bernard Tekpetey

Though a talented striker, Tekpetey only has one senior league appearance to his name at his club, Schalke 04. At 19, he is also very young, not to mention the fact that he has not been capped at any level for Ghana before. These factors look set to play against him.

2. Joseph Larweh Attamah

The former Black Satellites (Ghana U-20) star is also unlikely to break into Ghana's Afcon squad because of his inexperience. The İstanbul Başakşehir man, 22, is uncapped at senior level for Ghana and this will make is extremely difficult for him in a midfield that is brimming with experience, form and competition between many established players such as Afriyie Acquah, Mubarak Wakaso, Thomas Partey and Agyemang Badu.

3. Ebenezer Assifuah

Ghana's striking department seems saturated - seven players were named in the 26-man squad, and it is expected to see the most downsizing. With Tekpetey already out (per our projection), that leaves six names, and that is still a huge number of forwards to take for one tournament. That means another casualty might be on the cards here.

The likely candidates, per our estimation, are Raphael Dwamena, Majeed Waris and Ebenezer Assifuah.

Though the most inexperienced (no caps for Ghana at any level), Dwamena is the most inform of this trio, with 21 goals in 22 games for his Austria Lustenua side in the Austrian second tier this season. Observers at the Black Stars training sessions at the St Thomas Aquinas school park have also hailed him as the best performer during the entire warm up process. His current steam is likely to save him.

Majeed Waris looks set to travel to Gabon not necessarily based on form - his five goals in 18 games for French club Lorient this season isn't exactly too prolific for a man who at his peak once managed over 20 goals for Swedish side Hacken - but mainly based on the fact that he tried-and-tested (with 27 caps and four goals). As has been proved severally in the past, Grant loves to stick to experience and familiarity.

That leaves Assifuah. The 23-year-old, who top-scored the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, has both inexperience and form playing against him. He has been capped only once for Ghana, and his current form - three goals in 15 games so far this season at Swiss club FC Sion - falls short of that of his competitors on this list.
