Hearts of Oak suffer worst league defeat

On match day 17 of this year’s league WAFA thrashed Hearts of Oak 5-0 at the Sogakope AstroTurf to hand the Phobians their worst league defeat. They had never suffered a 5-goal margin defeat since the inception of the Ghanaian topflight league in the 1950’s, until WAFA did it on June 3.

Aduana Stars won their second Ghana Premier League title to become the first club in the Brong Ahafo region to do so:

The Dormaa based side in 2009-10 season made history by becoming the first Brong Ahafo side to win the Ghana Premier League. They did it in a grand style, winning it on their debut season, without conceding a goal at home which remains a Ghanaian club record. Berekum Chelsea joined them as the second Brong Ahafo side to win the GPL the following season, so by winning it this term Aduana Stars have done it twice which is a record by a Brong Ahafo side.

Gt. Olympics relegated for a record 5 time in the Ghana Premier League

No side have suffered relegation in the Ghana Premier League since its inception in the 1993-94 season than the ‘Wonder Club’. Before, 2004, Gt. Olympics were one of the few teams that took part of the maiden league in Ghana and had not seized to play.

Gt. Olympics were relegated for the first time in the 2004 novelty league season and have since been relegated on four different occasions- 2007-08, 2009-10, 2014-15 and 2017.

Hans Kwofie becomes the first player to score four (4) against Aduana Stars

The Dormaa based side on the final day of the league were handed a 4-2 defeat by Ashanti Gold, as Hans Kwofie bagged all the four goals for the Miners. It was the first time a player scored four goals against a very defensive side Aduana Stars.

Hearts of Oak longest trophy drought

The Phobians after failing to win the Ghana Premier League this have gone eight seasons without a trophy, which is their longest spell by the club without a league title. Hearts of Oak last won the Ghana Premier League in the 2008-09 season and in between there have been eight seasons, yet the second most successful club in the history of the Ghanaian topflight league have missed out on the trophy in all attempts.

The Accra giants longest spell without a league trophy was between 1962-63 to 1971, a total of seven (7) seasons, but after they failed to clinch it in the 2016-17 league season, the club have broken that record to go eight (8) seasons.

Kweku Azuandzie becomes the first Wa All Stars player to score four

The attacker registered four goals to emerge as the first player of the 2016 Ghana Premier League champions to score four goals when his side hammered Bolga All Stars 6-1
