5 worst league defeats of Hearts

Pulse sports statistical analyst, Thomas Freeman Yeboah takes you through the five worst league defeats of Hearts of Oak, after WAFA ditched them 3-0 on Saturday.

1. Hearts of Oak 0-3 Wa All Stars

Wa All Stars shockingly defeated Accra Hearts of Oak 3-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday in their second round opening game of the First Capital Plus Ghana Premier League

Hearts, who had lost the first round match day 15 tie couldn’t avenge that defeat, but sheepishly suffered the same defeat in the reverse fixture on match day 16 at the own backyard in a disgraceful fashion.

The Wa lads per the victory became the first club in the history of the Ghana Premier League to beat the 'Continental Club Masters' 6-0 in a home and away encounters.

Samuel Boateng started the scoring under two minutes before Abdul Ganiyu netted the second in the 57th minute and later teenager Pail De Valres Asare scored the third to create more problems for Hearts.

2. Hearts 0-3 Kotoko

A demolition gang from the Ashanti capital of Kumasi which goes by the name Asante Kotoko descended on the Accra Sports Stadium and completely reduced to shambles the soccer kingdom of Accra Hearts of Oak.

Kotoko were definitely in top gear and with ruthless efficiency, outplayed, outwitted, outjumped, outrun and finally outscored Hearts by an incredible margin of three goals to nothing in this epic outstanding league match.

This is the first time one on the inflicted their opponent with such a huge margin in the league. The three goals were scored by Opoku Afriyie , Francis Kumi,  Kofi Badu.

Kotoko shot into the lead with just six minutes into the game.  A free kick just outside the 18-yard box, well taken by George Kennedy found Francis Kumi, whose header was finally connected by Opoku Afriyie to give an early lead.

Francis Kumi and Kofi Badu were at their best and seized the midfield by displaying good dribbling skills.

With ten minutes to full-time Albert 5, Asase headed in what should have been goal number three but referee S. T. Mensah disallowed it because the goalie was fouled.

But put the icing on the cake for Kotoko by netting the third goal in the 86th minute to seal the doom of the Phobian in a never to be forgotten afternoon at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Mama Acquah the oldest player of Hearts’ team went, following the defeat.

3. B.A United 4-1 Hearts of Oak

1st January 1995

B.A United did the unexpected when they came from a goal down to demolish Hearts of Oak 4-1 at the Sunyani Sports Stadium on match day 10 of the 1994/95 league season. Th

Annor Aziz put Hearts of Oak in the driving seat, but hell broke lose as the home fans invaded the field agitating that the ball was scored from an offside position and the incident held play for 15 minutes. The game continued after sanity prevailed.

The Apostle of Power Soccer responded to the controversial, as they staged goal an incredible comeback by scoring four goals in the process: Nana Adarkwa, who named the man of the match before he doubled the lead for his side.

Hearts of Oak in frustration replaced Leonard Moffat with Ibrahim Dossey, but that couldn’t neutralise the threats of B.A United. They scored two more goals to complete the onslaught through Abukari Adams and Emmanuel Quaye.

4. Wa All Stars 3-0 Hearts of Oak

Hearts of Oak suffered one of their heaviest defeats in recent times when struggling Wa All Stars thrashed them 3-0 in the Ghana Premier League on match day 15 at the Wa Park.

Wa All Stars who had lost at home to Heart of Lions in their last home game returned to winning ways with an emphatic victory over the Phobians.

Dennis Adusei hit the opener for the hosts before Asare made it 2 in the 16th minute and again completed the demolishing exercise with the third goal to register a brace.

5. WAFA 3-0 Hearts

6th August 2016

West African Football Academy (WAFA) ended Hearts of Oak unbeaten way run in the 2015-16 campaign as they run riot over the Phobians by winning 3-0 on match day 23 at the Sogakope Park.

The Phobians were reduced to nothing in the first 27 minutes of the game as Komla Agbeniadan scored the first goal, Charles Boateng made it two for the home side before Agbeniadan grabbed a brace on the day.

N/B: The first criterion is the margin of the scoreline. The next one is where it happened. An away defeat to Hearts of Oak fetches more  points in the ranking of the worst defeats. Also, the strength of the team is also taken into consideration: A heroic feat by a weaker side fetches more points than against a stronger opposition.

AshGold's 3-0 victory against Hearts in 1995 couldn't make the list because they were the reigning champions at the time. Maybe it could make the 6th place if the list is extended.
