Facts on Hearts of Oak vs Kotoko games as both sides clash at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday

The first league encounter between them came in 1958, which the Phobians won 4-2 but it was replayed because the game ended abruptly and once again the Accra based side thrashed the Porcupine Warriors by 5 goals to 2 at the Kumasi Jackson Park, now the Jubilee Park

However, the last Monday they played on a Monday in all competitions was a friendly game dubbed, the Super Two which Kotoko defeated Hearts of Oak 2-0 in the first leg, courtesy of Ahmed Toure and Dauda Mohammed goals in Kumasi on Monday 6th October, 2014.

The last time a side lost in this tie in the league after taking 1-0 or a 2-0 into half the half time break was way back in 1964. Mfum scored first for Kotoko in the 40th minute, but Hearts of Oak fought from behind to win 3-2 in the 2nd half in August 1964.

This is going to be Referee Awal Mohammed’s second league game incharge of Hearts-Kotoko ties. He was the knight of the whistle when Kotoko drew goalless against Hearts of Oak in November, 2011.

Last season prior to their match day 25 encounter in Accra Hearts of Oak had lost to Edubiase under caretaker coach Eddie Ansah, while Kotoko had beaten AshGold on match day 24. This time around ahead of their clash on match day 10, Kotoko had suffered 0-1 defeat agains New Edubiase under a caretaker coach Michael Osei, whereas Hearts of Oak edged AshGold 2-1 on match day 9.

The last time Hearts of Oak played against Kotoko with a foreign coach was November, 2011. The Serbian Nebosjsa Vucicevic was in charge of the Phobians as they were held to a goalless draw by the Porcupine Warriors in Accra. It was the same game Awal Mohammed last officiated in Kotoko-Hearts league encounters. Japanese-American coach Kenichi Yatsuhashi will be on the touchline for Hearts of Oak, while Awal Mohammed has been appointed as the referee for the Monday clash in Accra.
