Eric Bekoe the goal-getter is back

Ghana’s Eric Bekoe has gone through injuries, training boycotts and team changes, but Pulse.com.gh sports writer Thomas Yeboah Freeman thinks he’s still got life left in him. He profiles the striker’s career to date.

Eric Bekoe is expected to make a lot of headlines for good reason, with ferocious attack threats to be a thorn in the flesh of many defenders in the 2015-16 Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Bekoe re-launched his career with Sekondi Hasaacas and although he couldn’t find the back of the net in his debut league game for the ‘Giants of the West’, he made amends by banging in two goals on match day 2, to go joint top of the scorer’s chart.

Hasaacas started this season’s Ghana Premier League on a very poor note amid the “old players’’ boycott of training session over unpaid salaries and bonuses prior to their 0-3 thrashing by Wa All Stars.

The Sekondi boys put it behind them and brought smiles back on to the faces of their home fans when they defeated debutants Techiman City 4-2 in a game Eric Bekoe put on a splendid display to register two goals in his name.

Bekoe’s second goal from 25 yards has thrown much light on his scoring credentials and despite scoring a brace he is not going to be swayed by his performance.

"There is more room for improvement because as a player there are more things to do. I shouldn't let this flatter me or make me swollen headed. There are more things to do, there is a whole lot of work to be done on me in particular because the expectations are more. I know with the help of the technical team things will be fine.  Like you can see today, I was given a role to play and the coach was also happy with the way I took things," he told Pulse.com.gh.

Much attention is now shifted to the former Asante Kotoko striker when it comes to players who could win the goal king for the ongoing season, because he has done it before and he is capable of doing it again to make him a household name in domestic football once again.

Bekoe was an instant hit at Kotoko in his maiden season with the Porcupine Warriors, scoring 17 league goals to beat them all to win the GPL top scorer for the 2007-08 season.

He scored in his debut premier league game for the club when they walloped All Blacks 3-0 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi and continued his good run of form to become the first Asante Kotoko player to win the top-scorer award, since Thomas Boakye in 1991.

I believe that Eric Bekoe could replicate the feat he chalked at Kotoko if he is to stay fit throughout the season. He is a hardworking attacker and his attacking prowess has been tested on countless times and it is up to him to prove wrong those people who think he is finished with football.

The 30-year-old striker made a mark at Egypt with Petroject and returned to the GPL after several seasons to play for Berekum Chelsea.

However, at Chelsea despite scoring against Hearts of Oak his season was cut short by injuries and he hasn’t been consistent since then.

The major bane of Bekoe has been his fitness and I think that should Hasaacas manage his fitness issue, he would make a good account of himself by the end of the 2015-16 Ghana Premier League.
