Hearts of Oak stun Berekum Chelsea to go top of the table

Hearts of Oak won their Ghana Premier League game away at Berekum Chelsea to go top of the league table.

The win takes the Phobians to the top of the league table following Wa All Stars 3-1 loss at Techiman City.

With three points at stake, both sides were fired up for it as the Phobians started the opening minutes of the game on a bright note. The home side were forced to defend deep due to the swift attacking play of the Accra giants.

Berekum Chelsea began stringing their passes together thus creating spaces in Hearts of Oak defence but Asiwome Fumador struck wide. The home side looked pale due to Saddick Adams’ absence – their leading top scorer is currently on duty in Japan with the Local Black Stars team.

Hearts of Oak dominated play by winning all the 50-50 balls in midfield, the Phobians came close in getting the opener but Samuel Yeboah’s close range shot hit the side net.

Berekum Chelsea also had a chance of their own as Nicholas Opoku’s 20 yards free-kick went straight into the waiting hands of Samuel Akuru.

Chances were far and few as the first half was brought to an end with a barren score line.

In the second half, Berekum Chelsea bombarded Hearts of Oak with a lot of attacks but the Phobians defended well as the home side in some stages of the game got frustrated.

The pendulum swung in Hearts of Oak favour and the home side were made it to pay for their profligacy as Samuel Yeboah struck the game’s opening goal in the 59 minute after a wonderful assist by Isaac Mensah.

Chelsea with a goal down besieged the goal area of the Phobians in search of the equalizer but the partnership of Robin Gnagne and Richard Akrofi silenced the home side attack. Hearts of Oak nearly scored the second goal but Cosmos Dauda shot hit the cross bar.

Kenichi Yatsuhashi then switched his tactics as he made his lads to defend their lead and it paid off as the away side won the game after five minutes time added.
