Top ten players to watch in the 2016-17 GPL

Pulse Sports writer/statistician Thomas Freeman Yeboah has compiled a list of top ten players who are expected to shine in the upcoming Ghana Premier League

Kwesi Donsu

All eye balls will be on the dead-ball expert Kwesi Donsu. He scored fifteen goals last season to finish second on the topscorers' chat. Donsu might be on his way to winning the Ghana Premier League top scorer’s award if he replicates last season’s form, since his closest competitors last term, Latif Blessing (17 goals) and Yahaya Mohammed (15 goals) are now plying their trade abroad.

Emmanuel Ocran

The enterprising attacker was a tormentor-in-chief for Wa All Stars last season and his eye for goals was amazing. He made a huge impact last season, with his hat-trick against Dreams FC on top of a tall list of great displays: It earned him a call-up to the Black Stars to be monitored by Avram Grant.

Abdul Bashiru

The Dreams fc full-back was the only defender shortlisted for Ghana Premier League player of the season award last season. He missed out on the ultimate award and mysteriously failed to win the defender of the year award, despite being nominated. He has joined FA Cup champions Bechem United for the upcoming season, after Dreams FC got relegated for fielding an unqualified player.

Amos Frimpong

The Asante Kotoko defender was one of the players that really lived up to the billing last season as he scored plenty goals to help the course of the Porcupine Warriors. He scored as many as 8 goals from right back to end the season as the club’s top scorer and the defender with most goals in the Ghanaian topflight league. He developed a niche for himself as a penalty expect.

Inusah Musah

The Accra Hearts of Oak defender gave Hearts of Oak fans a lot to cheer about. Inusah Musah, despite breaking into the Hearts of Oak team in the second round, after he was sidelined in the first round of the season through injury, came out strongly and brought stability to the backline of the Phobians in the second half of the season. His performance won him several Man of the Match awards and it caught the attention of Avram Grant who handed him an opportunity to be with the Black Stars.

Malik Akowuah

The dreadlocked midfielder was very instrumental in Medeama’s CAF Confederation Cup campaign last year. He gave the backline of the Tarkwa-based club much protection as they battled with the giants on the African continent. Malik Akowuah joined Hearts of Oak in a controversial transfer and he is expected to hit the ground running in this season.

Abass Mohammed

Much would be expected of Asante Kotoko’s new striker Abass Mohammed, since he was signed to replace promising star Dauda Mohammed, who is now plying his trade abroad with Anderlecht in the Belgian league. Abass Mohammed was a delight to watch in the Ghana Premier League and he scored crucial goals for Medeama to cushion them during their CAF Champions League campaign last season.

Emmanuel Osei Baffour

The former academy player is now the go to man at Ashgold. He helped the Miners win the Ghana Premier League (GPL) last two seasons by creating several goalscoring opportunities for the four-time champions of Ghana and despite AshGold’s poor display last term he was the stand out player.

Komla Agbeniadan

The Togolese import was very instrumental for WAFA and stepped into the big shoes of Samuel Tetteh after he joined the West African Football Academy (WAFA) in the second round of the season. He scored a lot of goals for the academy side, notable among them was his brace against Hearts of Oak to end their unbeaten run. His good performance for the season earned him a national team call-up.

Gorkel Ahortor

The midfielder scored a career best seven goals for Inter Allies in the league and consequently won the club's player of the season. Five of his goals were scored from a direct free-kick and he was only second to Kwesi Donsu who scored 12 goals from the dead-ball situation.
