Sulley Muntari named among 100 most influential people of African descent

Ghanaian international, Sulley Ali Muntari has been named as part of a prestigious list of 100 influential men and women with an African heritage under 40 by the United Nations.

The Most influential people of African Descent (MIPAD ) global list is the brainchild of the United Nations to identify high achievers both in the public and private sectors to support the International Decade proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in the 68/237 resolution. The International Decade runs from 2015 and is expected to end in the year 2024.

The Pescara midfielder was shortlisted along with his Ivoirian counterpart, Didier Drogba, musician Jidenna who hails from Nigeria, Oscar-winning Kenyan actress, Lupita Nyong’o and Manchester United’s  Paul Pogba in the media and culture category.

According to a statement by the forum which was announced on social media,  Suleyman Ali Muntari has been recognised for his achievements as a footballer for both club and country.

The statement read:

“Suleyman Ali "Sulley" Muntari is a Ghanaian professional footballer who plays as a central midfielder for Italian club Pescara. During his time with Internazional, he helped the team win the Champions League in 2009/10 and the Serie A title in 2008 -09 and 2009/10. He was also part of the Portsmouth team that won the FA Cup in 2007/08. A full international for Ghana since 2002, he has earned over 80 caps for the national team and has been selected for two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and three FIFA World Cups. Due to his achievements, We at MIPAD recognise him as one of the Most Influential People of African Descent, Class of 2017.”

An Awards Gala and dinner is scheduled to take place on 26th September 2017 in New York City to honour members from the MIPAD class of 2017.  Former US President Barack Obama and UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres have been invited as special guests.
