Jordan Spieth shrugs off critics after win

After deciding to play in the US days out from The Open Championship, Jordan Spieth said it was job done at the John Deere Classic.

Jordan Spieth said his critics did not bother him after he overcame a slow start at the John Deere Classic to win his fourth PGA Tour title of the season.

Spieth's final tournament before his attempt to extend his Grand Slam bid at The Open Championship begins on Thursday saw him stay on US soil, rather than follow several other contenders in competing in the European Tour's Scottish Open.

The 21-year-old, who broke his US tour duck with victory at the same event two years back, stayed true to his commitment to the event at TPC Deere Run - despite now flying to Scotland within days of him teeing off on the third leg of his calendar slam bid.

"I really didn't care [about the critics] anyways. I came here for a reason, and we accomplished that reason," Spieth said after his play-off win over Tom Gillis.

Spieth started the tournament with an even-par 71 to be eight shots off the lead, but went 64-61-68 thereafter to bag his fifth career US win.

"To be able to shoot 20 under in three rounds is nice momentum," Spieth said.

"The finish, when I really didn't feel like tee to green I had much [luck on Sunday], gives me a lot of momentum to draw on if I don't have my best stuff."

The Open returns to St Andrews for the first time since Louis Oosthuizen stunned the golfing world with a seven-stroke major victory in 2010.

Spieth said he would still have to put some work into his fairway game if he was to make it three majors in succession.

"I need to fine tune my driver. I love where my putter is at. My pace control, my speed is awesome right now," he said.
