Ghanaian midfielder arrested in Sweden for raping young girl

Sarfo will be kept in custody by the Swedish police until Sunday when a decision is taken whether to extend the time he is held or released.

Ghanaian winger Kingsley Sarfo has been arrested for an alleged sexual assault in Sweden.

The 21-year-old was arrested in Malmo on Saturday on a single-sourced allegation, damaging his chances of making his debut for the Black Stars.

“I can confirm that it is (Sarfo) him who is suspected. He has been arrested and now requested to be detained. I think there are likely reasons. He is suspected of rape against a child on more than one occasion, “said Rikard Darell, prosecutor, told a newspaper in Sweden.

Sarfo has been included in coach Kwesi Appiah’s 26-man squad for the crucial 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Uganda in Kampala next month.

The young midfielder earlier this week confirmed he had applied for nationality switch to enable him to represent the European country but Ghana’s persistence had led to a change of mind with the West African country including him in their squad for their upcoming games in October.

If he goes to jail he’ll become the second Ghanaian player to go to jail in Sweden in recent times after former Heart of Lions midfielder Kwame Bonsu, who played for Gefle IF, was sentenced to 2 years for sexual abuse against his ex-wife.
