Schlupp powered up for new season

Jeffrey Schlupp is ready to turn up the voltage for Leicester City at the start of the new Barclays Premier League season after a full recharge over the summer.

City’s Ghana international flyer returned for pre-season training towards the end of this week with all the buzz of a man whose off-season included a maiden goal for his country and a new four-year deal with his boyhood club.

And having taken the opportunity to fully switch off during the summer break, the Foxes’ Young Player of the Year is now ready to plug back in for another successful season in the top flight, which kicks off at King Power Stadium against Sunderland on 8 August.

“It’s been good,” Jeff said of his summer. “I had some extra football straight after because I was away with Ghana, but I managed to get away after that and spend some time with the family, which is what you need after a long season.

“I feel like the batteries are recharged now and I’m ready to go for the new season.

“There are some tough games at the start, but you can’t complain too much given the start we had last season!

“You know you’re going to have to play everyone twice and teams will go through good form and bad form, so you’ve just got to take one game at a time and make sure we’re ready on 8 August.”

Schlupp’s summer started with his latest call-up to the Ghana squad and a first goal on the international stage – the Black Stars’ sixth in a 7-1 win over Mauritius.

Establishing himself as a regular for his country remains a long-term goal for the 22-year-old Academy graduate and he hopes, with his long-term future at City secure, his domestic performances can continue to earn him international recognition.

“I started a game for the first time in about a year and managed to get myself a goal, which was a real bonus,” he said of the win over Mauritius.

“Hopefully I can keep getting called into the squad and it can play a big part in my career. “I think the two can go very much hand-in-hand, so I want to make sure I’m doing well for Leicester and, if that gets me into the Ghana squad, to make sure I’m doing well for Ghana too.”
