Alonso clipped the left-rear tyre of Esteban Gutierrez on lap 18 as he attempted to overtake the Haas driver at turn three.
The Spaniard's McLaren hit the wall and flipped several times before coming to an abrupt halt in the barriers.
Alonso was amazingly able to free himself from the wreckage and walk away, waving to the relieved fans around Albert Park as the race was red flagged.
