Russian hammer thrower Tatyana Lysenko has been stripped of the Olympic gold medal she won in London four years ago due to a failed drugs test.

The 33-year-old two-time world champion was suspended by the IAAF in April this year after testing positive for a banned substance.

Lysenko has now been ordered to return the gold she was awarded at London 2012 following reanalysis of her sample from the Games.

The former world record holder, who celebrated her birthday on Sunday, tested positive for anabolic steroid turinabol, prompting the IOC to disqualify her from the London Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed that Lysenko stated that she could not understand why reanalysis of her test had shown positive results.

Lysenko also emailed the IOC in May this year stating: "In the future, such issues, please do not bother me. I have a young child. I do not have the opportunity and time."

Lysenko served a two-year ban for a doping violation from 2007 to 2009.
