Blue Jays sweep Royals, Orioles edge Dodgers in MLB

The Toronto Blue Jays completed a sweep of the Kansas City Royals in MLB, while the Baltimore Orioles eventually beat the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Michael Saunders homered and Marcus Stroman pitched eight strong innings as the Blue Jays beat defending World Series champions the Royals 4-2 for a three-game sweep.

The Orioles needed 14 innings at Dodger Stadium before a Jonathan Schoop two-run double helped them to a 6-4 win.

The Chicago Cubs slumped to their 32nd loss of the season, beaten 5-3 by the Cincinnati Reds.

The Detroit Tigers claimed a 12-2 win over Cleveland for their first win in 12 matches against the Indians this season.

Ervin Santana gave up just two hits as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Oakland Athletics 4-0 and the New York Mets were 4-2 victors over the Miami Marlins.

The Chicago White Sox shut out the New York Yankees 5-0, the Boston Red Sox were 11-6 winners over the Texas Rangers and the Los Angeles Angels overcame the Tampa Bay Rays 7-2.

The Washington Nationals claimed a 7-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers and the Philadelphia Phillies had a 4-3 comeback victory against the Atlanta Braves.

The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the St Louis Cardinals 7-5 and the Houston Astros held on to beat the Seattle Mariners 9-8.

The San Francisco Giants claimed a 5-1 win over the Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres cruised past the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-6.

Right-hander Santana turned back the clock in a start against the A's, firing a complete-game shutout for the eighth time in his career and first since 2012. The 33-year-old only allowed two hits while striking out eight with zero walks.

ORTIZ HITS 20TH HOMER

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz started his club's 11-run onslaught with a two-run homer in the first inning against the Rangers. The blast was Ortiz's 20th of the season, marking the 15th straight season with at least 20 homers. The only players with longer season streaks in history are Hank Aaron (20) and Babe Ruth (16).

Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton is the 24th player in MLB history to hit a home run in four consecutive at-bats, per Opta Sports. His second homer of the day against the Mets travelled 470 feet, the longest homer ever hit at Citi Field.

PIRATES TAKE ON CARDINALS

Touted Pirates pitching prospect Tyler Glasnow will make his MLB debut on Thursday after stymying opponents in the minors. Glasnow owned a 1.78 ERA and 113 strikeouts at Triple-A Indianapolis. The Cards will answer with veteran Adam Wainwright (7-5, 4.70 ERA).
