Giants outscore Padres in thriller, Blue Jays swept at home by White Sox

The San Francisco Giants won a thriller at home to the San Diego Padres, triumphing 13-9 in a high-scoring affair.

Brandon Belt knocked in five runs while Matt Duffy and Hunter Pence had three hits each as the Giants recorded their best offensive performance of the season to sweep the Padres.

The Chicago White Sox completed a sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays as they won their sixth straight in a 4-0 triumph as Jose Quintana struck out 10 in six innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies shut out the Washington Nationals 3-0, the Boston Red Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 9-4, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 and the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-2.

J.D. Martinez homered and drove in four to support Justin Verlander as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics 9-4, while the Texas Rangers edged the New York Yankees 3-2, with Elvis Andrus' triple allowing Rougned Odor to score the winning run.

The Cleveland Indians edged the Minnesota Twins 6-5, while the Kansas City Royals had no luck on the road as they went down to the Los Angeles Angels 4-2, despite taking a 2-0 lead after the first inning, while the St. Louis Cardinals dominated the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-4.

The Miami Marlins had Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna to thank for their first-inning RBI singles as they beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0, while the Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners 7-4.

BLUE JAYS HIT NEW LOW

The Blue Jays demonstrated their ability to frustrate once again as they were swept at home for the first time since 2013.

Meanwhile, Rockies rookie Trevor Story sent another MLB record tumbling when he recorded his ninth home run of the season, setting a National League record for a rookie in April.

Thursday's pitching match-up of the day features Jose Fernandez (1-2, 4.37 ERA) and Kenta Maeda (3-0, 0.36 ERA) finishing up a four-game series between the Marlins and Dodgers. Maeda has been impressive thus far in his MLB career, allowing just one run in 25.1 innings.
