Rain reduces India-Pakistan clash to 48 overs per side

Rohit Sharma was 77 not out and Virat Kohli, the India captain, unbeaten on 24 after Pakistan skipper Safraz Ahmed had won the toss and opted to field.

India's Virat Kohli (L) bats as Pakistan wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed looks on during the ICC Champions trophy match at Edgbaston in Birmingham, central England on June 4, 2017

When play resumed at 14:18pm local time (1318 GMT), India were 173 for one in 33.1 overs.

Rohit Sharma was 77 not out and Virat Kohli, the India captain, unbeaten on 24 after Pakistan skipper Safraz Ahmed had won the toss and opted to field.

Mohammad Amir had been the pick of Pakistan's attack so far, with none for 23 in 6.1 overs.

But fellow left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz had proved expensive, his four wicketless overs costing 34 runs.

Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan shared an opening stand of 136 either side of an initial 50-minute rain interruption.

Left-hander Dhawan eventually fell for 68 when he hit a full toss from teenage leg-spinner Shadab Khan to Azhar Ali at deep midwicket.

This was both Asian giants' first match of the 2017 Champions Trophy, a tournament featuring the world's top-eight one-day international teams.

When India won the last edition, in 2013, they beat Pakistan by eight wickets in a rain-affected group match at Edgbaston.
