Team director Ravi Shastri's contract expired following the ICC World Twenty20 and the BCCI announced it would appoint a head coach for the first time since Duncan Fletcher left the role in 2015.

On Sunday, BCCI president Anurag Thakur confirmed interested parties for the role had three weeks to apply, but given India's limited-overs tour to Zimbabwe starts on June 8 an interim measure needed to be put in place.

That sees Bangar handed control of the touring party, stepping up from his role as assistant to Shastri.

The 43-year-old will have Abhay Sharma alongside him as fielding coach for the three one-day internationals and three T20Is.
