Jon Lester struck out nine over eight scoreless innings and added a double in the victory, while Jason Heyward hit his 100th career home run as the Cubs improved to a win-loss record of 40-16, becoming the fastest team to the mark since the Seattle Mariners in 2001.

The 1906 Chicago Cubs and 2001 Mariners both hold the MLB record for most victories in a season with 116, and Joe Maddon's men are on pace to tie that record.

Michael Fulmer helped the in-form Detroit Tigers to an emphatic 11-0 shutout of the Toronto Blue Jays for their fourth consecutive win.

World Series champions the Kansas City Royals slumped to a fifth successive defeat, upstaged by American League (AL) East-leading Baltimore Orioles 4-1, the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 and the Colorado Rockies accounted for the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1.

Tigers outfielder Justin Upton went two-for-four with a walk, scoring three times and driving in three runs in Detroit's 11-run win over the Blue Jays.

ODOR GIVES RANGERS WALK-OFF WIN

Designated hitter Rougned Odor, who homered earlier in the game, gave the Rangers a walk-off victory over the Astros with a double off the left-field wall at the bottom of the ninth inning.

STORY HOMERS AGAIN

Rockies rookie Trevor Story hit another home run on Monday in Colorado's win over the Dodgers. Story now has 16 homers, which is the most by a rookie shortstop before the All-Star break.

ROYALS LOOKING TO END SKID

The streaking Royals will lock horns again with the Orioles on Tuesday, seeking to arrest their losing run. Baltimore hope they get another solid effort like Mike Wright had Monday when they turn to Ubaldo Jimenez (2-6, 6.59 ERA) to square off against Kansas City's Yordano Ventura (4-3, 4.82). The Chicago White Sox hope to stay in contention in the AL Central as they open a three-game series against the National League (NL) East-leading Washington Nationals.
