Cubs win battle of Chicago, Pirates cruise

MLB: Addison Russell struck a grand slam as the Chicago Cubs defeated neighbors the White Sox in style.

An Addison Russell grand slam turned a tight Chicago derby into a rout as the Cubs knocked off the White Sox 8-1 on Wednesday.

Russell stepped up to the plate at the bottom of the eighth with bases loaded and his side leading 4-1, and he more than doubled the advantage with a huge blast to seal the victory.

Gerrit Coles' first complete game was one to remember as the Pittsburgh Pirates cruised to a 10-1 win over the Seattle Mariners.

The Pirates pitcher improved to 6-6 as he threw the whole game while he also scored a run off the back of a Starling Marte walk with bases loaded in what proved a fantastic day out for the home side, who improved their season record to 52-48.

The Miami Marlins bats were also on fire as Giancarlo Stanton grabbed his 22nd home run of the season to spark a 16-run attack in an 11-1 drubbing of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Don Kelly hit two triples and was one of four Marlins to record three hits on the back of over six scoreless innings from Adam Conley.

The Washington Nationals defeated the Cleveland Indians 4-1 as Stephen Strasburg blanked the visitors for seven innings, and the San Diego Padres halted the Toronto Blue Jays recent progress with an 8-4 win.

The Detroit Tigers edged the Boston Red Sox 4-3 for win number 54 thanks to Miguel Cabrera's go-ahead homer at the top of the ninth, while the Tampa Bay Rays triumphed 3-1 over the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds were 2-1 winners over the San Francisco Giants.

The Baltimore Orioles mixed recent form continued with a 3-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies, the New York Mets went down 5-4 to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Houston Astros enjoyed a 4-1 win at the expense of the New York Yankees, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 6-4.

Elsewhere, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-1, the Atlanta Braves won against the Minnesota Twins 9-7, and the Kansas City Royals were 7-5 winners over the Los Angeles Angels.

COMPLETE COLES

Coles' first complete game saw him level his personal tally to 6-6 as he struck out six Mariners and allowed just three hits for one run in. He even managed to score a run himself.

RUSSELL BRINGS IT HOME

Russell's late grand slam for the Cubs ensured the was no nervy end in the all-Chicago clash against the White Sox.

After homering for the fifth time in five games, Reds slugger Jay Bruce has reached the 25-homer mark for the sixth time in his career. Only Frank Robinson (nine), Johnny Bench (eight) and Adam Dunn (seven) have more 25-homer seasons in Reds history.

MARLINS WELCOME CARDINALS

In the hunt for a wild-card spot, the Cardinals send Michael Wacha (5-7, 4.37 ERA) to the mound against Jose Fernandez (12-4, 2.54 ERA), who is looking to move to 27-1 in his career at Marlins Park. Reigning NL batting champion Dee Gordon will be eligible to be reinstated following an 80-game suspension of PEDs.
