Dale Steyn leads South Africa to win over New Zealand

Dale Steyn ripped through New Zealand to seal the Test and a series win for South Africa in Centurion on Tuesday.

A five-wicket haul from Dale Steyn helped South Africa record a comprehensive victory over New Zealand on Tuesday and seal the Test series.

The Proteas' premier strike bowler claimed his 26th Test five-for, finishing with figures of 5-33 as the hosts won by 204 runs on day four in Centurion, earning a 1-0 series win after the first match ended in a draw.

Resuming at 105-6, the hosts added just 27 for the loss of one wicket from their overnight score, declaring on 132-7 with a lead of 399.

Led by Steyn, South Africa then ripped through the Black Caps' specialists early in their second innings at SuperSport Park to leave little doubt over the outcome.

Tom Latham (0) departed first ball attempting to leave a Steyn delivery that reared up to hit the bat before ricocheting onto the stumps.

And Martin Guptill (0) followed with the final delivery of the opening over, the first he faced, edging a ball swinging away from off stump to Hashim Amla at first slip.

It was just the fifth occasion in Test history that both openers have fallen to golden ducks in the same innings and the first time since Sri Lanka suffered that embarrassing fate, also against the Proteas, in 2000.

There was little respite for the tourists, Ross Taylor going for yet another Kiwi duck when he was trapped lbw by a Steyn grubber after the expected bounce failed to materialise.

Skipper Kane Williamson was the first batsman to get off the mark for the visitors, but he could only manage five runs from 11 deliveries before Vernon Philander (2-34) struck, wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock getting down brilliantly to his right to take a low catch from an edge.

The top order having comprehensively failed, it took Henry Nicholls (76) and BJ Watling (32) to temporarily halt the slide, the pair putting on 68 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was removed lbw by Dane Piedt (1-52), the umpire's initial decision upheld on review.

Mitchell Santner hung around briefly as a foil for Nicholls but could only add 16 runs before having his middle stump removed by Steyn.

Doug Bracewell managed a brisk 30 prior to getting out lbw to Philander, and Kagiso Rabada (2-54) then struck twice in quick succession to bowl Tim Southee for 14, before trapping Neil Wagner (3) with a full, straight delivery.

Fittingly, it was Steyn who claimed the final wicket, a short ball drawing Nicholls into a shot that found Rabada in the deep to end his resistance and put New Zealand out of their misery.
