French Open: Roberta Vinci out, Muguruza through

Seventh seed Roberta Vinci was unceremoniously dumped out by Kateryna Bondarenko in the first round of the French Open, while Garbine Muguruza made hard work of avoiding an early exit on Monday.

Vinci arrived at Roland Garros on the back of four defeats in her last five matches and last year's US Open runner-up was out of sorts again as she was beaten 6-1 6-3 by the unseeded Bondarenko of the Ukraine.

Bondarenko.is ranked 58 places below the experienced Italian, but Vinci managed only 10 winners to and was broken six times to fall at the first hurdle with a whimper on a cool day in Paris.

Muguruza was also up against in on the clay in Paris, but the fourth seed came from a set down to beat struggling Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 3-6 6-3 6-3 on day two of the tournament.

Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska dished out a 6-2 6-0 thrashing to Bojana Jovanovski, while Simona Halep made light work of beating Nao Hibino.

MUGURUZA IN FROM THE COLD

Last year's Wimbledon runner-up Muguruza was in trouble when she lost the first set before saving nine break points in the first game of the second against Schmiedlova on Suzanne-Lenglen Court.

Slovakian Schmiedlova has endured a miserable year so far, though, and endured more frustration as the Spaniard, who racked up eight double faults, got herself out of a hole to book a second-round encounter with Myrtille Georges.

Muguruza said: "We didn't have time to warm up [because of the weather], only the 10 minutes, which is kind of weird. It was so cold. Even though I was running and playing, I felt cold. I thought it was going to rain. I was looking to the sky, I'm like, Oh, please, you know...."

RADWANSKA WARY OF GARCIA AFTER JOVANOVSKI ROUT

Radwanska moved into round two at a canter, winning half of her 10 break points to seal an emphatic victory over Jovanovski in only 63 minutes to ensure she will face Caroline Garcia in round two.

Garcia warmed up for her home grand slam with a victory in Strasbourg and Radwanska is not expecting to have things all her own way.

The Pole said: "That's for sure going to be a different match. I guess she's on fire winning last week. She's a good hitter, and we had couple of good matches, long ones."

HIGH HOPES FOR HALEP

Sixth seed Halep was in no mood to hand around needed only 45 minutes to saunter into the second round with a crushing 6-2 6-0 hammering of Hibino.

The 2014 French Open runner-up, winner of the Madrid Open this month, won six of seven break points against the world number 71 to advance for a second-round meeting with Zarina Diyas.

Halep said: "Always when I go on court I feel that I can win the match. So this makes myself a little bit more positive, a little bit more stronger on court, and I just want to go to play. I'm already in the second round. I feel good, and I feel that I have the game to win matches here."

ERRANI AND PLISKOVA SUFFER SHOCK DEFEATS

Sara Errani was another Italian to suffer a first-round exit in Paris, going down 6-3 6-2 to outsider Tsvetana Pironkova.

Errani, seeded 16, was a beaten finalist at Roland Garros four years ago and reached the semi-final the following year before twice going out in the last eight but could not muster a solitary win this time around and has lost five matches in a row.

Shelby Rogers also caused an upset by dumping out 17th seed Karolina Pliskova with a 3-6 6-4 6-3 victory in round one.
