Game halted as Cubs outfielder flees from swarm of bees

Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward climbed the outfield fence, not to steal an extra-base hit, but to escape a menacing swarm of bees.

Heyward belted a two-run homer in the third inning of Sunday's spring training game against the Seattle Mariners, just minutes after being stung "at least 20 times" by bees swarming Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona.

As the Mariners batted in the top of the third, Heyward began waving his arms in centre field. Play stopped for five minutes as the 2010 All-Star fled, even climbing the outfield fence in a bid to escape.

"It started on my face then the back of my head over here," Heyward said. "It's OK. I'm not allergic.

"They came over from right field so I tried to get out of the way. I should have gone over the fence."

A camera that panned around the field showed a swarm of bees descending on the park, and spectators covering themselves with blankets to avoid the plague.

After play resumed, Heyward jacked the home run in the bottom of the third but the Cubs still lost 12-9.
