Europe's fightback was continuing on Saturday, with Darren Clarke's men threatening to gain parity or even a lead ahead of the singles.

A thrilling Ryder Cup was proving too close to call as the United States and Europe battled for supremacy in Saturday's fourball contests at Hazeltine.Reigning champions Europe began the fourth session of five trailing by 6.5 points to 5.5, having staged an impressive comeback after suffering a 4-0 whitewash in the opening foursomes.

And there looked set to be little between the sides heading into Sunday's singles, with both teams up in two matches as the final set of better-ball contests hotted up.

Thomas Pieters and Rory McIlroy were again playing starring roles for Europe, moving four up after nine holes against fellow big-hitters Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka. Rookie Pieters will have featured in every round of matches come Sunday and is chasing a third successive win in partnership with the pumped-up McIlroy.

Match three was going the way of the USA, Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar one up on Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia through seven. The Spaniard had come from four down to rescue a half alongside compatriot Rafael Cabrera Bello earlier in the day.

Lee Westwood was recalled by Europe after a dismal first-morning display. He and Danny Willett were one up on Ryan Moore and JB Holmes after seven.

The anchor match saw Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth - the victims of Garcia and Cabrera Bello's superb comeback in the Saturday foursomes - facing Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose for the third time this week. Reed holed his pitch to the par-five sixth for an eagle that saw the USA move one up.
