Henrik Stenson is hoping he will not require another knee operation as the Open champion targets more success in the FedExCup play-offs and the Ryder Cup.

The Swede pulled out of The Barclays last week after carding a 74 in his opening round as he struggled with a knee problem that required surgery last year.

Stenson underwent a scan this week and was informed that he had suffered a torn meniscus, but the 40-year-old will tee off in the Deutsche Bank Championship on Friday.

With the Ryder Cup getting under way at the Hazeltine National Golf Course later this month and FedEx Cup points to play for, the world number four is eager to avoid going under the knife.

"I had the MRI report on Monday and it's the same one I had operated in December last year," he told the Golf Channel.

"I have a small re-tear in the back side of the meniscus, a different place from previous, but that's what's causing the symptoms I guess.

"At this point I'm hoping not to have do another surgery, I've just got to try and see how it progresses and how much grief it gives me.

"It might not be that much golf the rest of the month, depending on how I do this week. Otherwise I have some time off before the Ryder Cup and after that as well. We'll see how we get along. It's been a long summer, lots of golf."
