Lewis Hamilton is on his way to retaining the Formula One championship after winning the Italian Grand Prix in Monz.

Hamilton looked set for a routine victory when he opened up a huge lead after starting on pole, but there was late drama when he was urged to push on over the radio due to some concerns with his car.

But his substantial lead over Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel ensured he would not be caught as he stretched his lead over team-mate Rosberg to 53 points after the German pulled over with only two laps remaining.

Rosberg was denied a third-placed finish as he climbed out of his flaming car on a day that could be crucial in the battle for the title, with Felipe Massa finishing behind Vettel and the Brazilian's Williams team-mate Valtteri Bottas fourth.

Hamilton crossed the line 25 seconds ahead of Vettel as he won in Italy for a third time and a second year in a row, his seventh race victory of 2015.

But Mercedes clearly have some issues to address after Rosberg's late retirement, which allowed Hamilton to take a giant stride towards claiming a third world championship title.

The drama was by no means restricted to the end of the race, as Kimi Raikkonen dropped from the front row to last after his Ferrari stood still on the grid at the start.

Rosberg dropped from fourth to sixth after having to swerve around Raikkonen, who recovered to finish fifth.
