Logano wins confusion-filled All-Star race

Joey Logano passed Kyle Larson with two laps remaining to secure victory and the $1million prize at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday.

Joey Logano passed Kyle Larson with two laps remaining to secure victory and the $1million prize at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday.

Larson, who won the Sprint Showdown earlier in the day to gain entry for the All-Star Race, hit the wall as he was passed by Logano, meaning he dropped down to 16th.

Logano was able to cruise to the chequered flag at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for his first ever All-Star Race win.

However, the new format - which includes two 50-lap segments with mandatory green-flag pit stops and a 13-lap trophy dash - induced confusion among a number of drivers, who were still confused about how the race was scored.

"They got everybody together, a lap down, the lead lap, a lap down. It's the most screwed up All-Star Race I've ever been a part of. I'm glad this is the last one," Tony Stewart told Fox Sports after being involved in a wreck with Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne.

"I'm alright. I'm just madder than hell. I don't understand how the hell they officiated this whole thing from start to finish."

The running order was flipped in the first segment when five drivers waited until the end of the section to complete a required green-flag stop, which Kenseth failed to do, dropping him a lap.

Prior to the start of the final segment, a random draw decided the top 11 cars needed to pit a mandatory four-tyre pit stop. Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch were forced to stay out on older tires and lead the field to green for the final 13-lap segment.

The cars with four new tyres lined up behind those with older tyres, and while the format was supposed to entice a wreck, or come-from-behind victories, Johnson and Kyle Busch among others were quickly out of the race lead on the older tyres by the time the field reached the backstretch.

As for the expected wrecks on the final segment, Larson's scrape with the wall was the only blemish.

Logano was joined on the podium by Team Penske team-mate Brad Keselowski and Hendrick Motorsports' Dale Earnhardt Jr.
