Victory at the British MotoGP came as a surprise to Suzuki rider Maverick Vinales.

Maverick Vinales concedes he did not think it was possible to claim a win in MotoGP this season after storming to victory at Silverstone to end Suzuki's long wait to top the podium.

The Spaniard kept his composure after an early red flag due to an incident between Pol Espargaro and Loris Baz to take victory ahead of Cal Crutchlow and Valentino Rossi at the British Grand Prix.

It marked Vinales' maiden MotoGP victory and Suzuki's first win in the premier class since Chris Vermeulen took the chequered flag in France in 2007.

The 21-year-old ranks his victory as his finest moment in the sport, but admits he thought his wait for a race win would have to wait until 2017 when he makes the switch to Yamaha.

"For sure, it is the best moment and also I didn't think this year I could do it. I was just thinking on next year to try to do it," he said.

"Honestly, I'm so happy and to do it for the team before I leave Suzuki is one of the best things I could give to them.

"With the team we were trying to make many laps on that hard tyre and I need to thank to them because the bike was working perfect.

"I was feeling great and already in the first race I pushed after the third corner and already I could feel that I was breaking a little bit the riders that came from the back."

Vinales also insisted that his win has not left him with any regrets over his decision to swap teams next season.

"Honestly I didn't change my mind and when I make one decision I am 100 per cent and we worked so hard on Friday to have one bike that conserved the tyre until the end and also in Brno we did one step in that way," he added.
