Muguruza and the rest of the WTA Tour field have been forced to watch on in awe of world number one Williams, who enjoyed an almost flawless 2015 season as she won three major tournaments.

The 34-year-old American lost only three of her 56 matches last year, with a shock semi-final loss to Roberta Vinci at the US Open derailing her bid for a maiden calendar-year Grand Slam.

But Spaniard Muguruza is plotting the difficult task of ending Williams' dominance of the women's game, which has seen the veteran top the rankings since February 2013.

"I'm really motivated this year, it's really great to be starting the year as No. 3," said the 22-year-old as she prepares for the Brisbane International, which gets underway on Sunday.

"Serena is still dominating. We've seen the whole year when she won, it's very difficult to beat her but at some point, maybe it's going to change.

"I mean, she's been there for a lot of years, so let's see. For now, she’s still dominating."

Muguruza also enjoyed a successful season in 2015, reaching her maiden grand slam final at Wimbledon, which she lost to Williams in straight sets.

A semi-finalist at the season-ending WTA Finals, Muguruza hopes the experience at SW19 will hold her in good stead heading into the Australian Open, starting January 18.

Muguruza added: "It's true that it gives you more confidence.

"There's only two players in the entire year that are going to be there. You believe, I’m here, it’s true, I'm here so I can do it."
