The architect of one of the most ambitious and unprecedented rebuilding projects in NBA history has stepped down from his post.

Philadelphia 76ers general manager and president of basketball operations Sam Hinkie resigned on Wednesday.

"While we are disappointed in Sam's decision, we would like to sincerely thank him for his contributions over the past three seasons," 76ers managing general partner Josh Harris said in a statement.

"There is no question that Sam's work put us in a very strong position to take advantage of numerous opportunities for an exciting future."

The 76ers, who have the NBA's worst record (10-68) this season, have been perennial bottom feeders in the league since Hinkie took over in 2013, selecting from the NBA Draft lottery every season under his watch.  One of those draft choices, Michael Carter-Williams, was traded after being named rookie of the year.

Another, Joel Embiid has yet to step foot on an NBA floor nearly two years after being drafted.

"There has been much criticism of our approach. There will be more," Hinkie wrote in his 13-page resignation letter, obtained by ESPN.

"A competitive league like the NBA necessitates a zig while our competitors comfortably zag. We often chose not to defend ourselves against much of the criticism, largely in an effort to stay true to the ideal of having the longest view in the room."

Bryan Colangelo is reportedly favourite to replace Hinkie.
