Australian GP winner Rosberg and Mercedes dominated second practice under lights in Bahrain as the German outpaced team-mate and reigning Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton by 0.241 seconds.

Ferrari were well off the pace as they encountered trouble, with Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel fifth and sixth respectively.

Four-time world champion Vettel was left to push his car late in FP2 before it was towed away.

However, Rosberg insisted Ferrari are not out of the running, telling reporters: "We expect Ferrari to be a threat.

"For sure it's going to be tough against them. But we're looking good, we had a good day today, we were quick so we're happy.

"There could be a few surprises in the race for sure because with the tyres there are so many different strategies you can do.

"If there's a safety car or something there can be massive surprises."
