The Kansas City Royals received good news after they rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 8-7 on Saturday, when they learned catcher Salvador Perez avoided major injury.

Perez was involved in a collision with team-mate Cheslor Cuthbert as the two pursued an infield pop up in the ninth inning.

Perez rolled around in agony, immediately signalling for a trainer, and needed to be helped off the field. A major knee injury was feared.

Royals manager Ned Yost announced after the game Perez suffered a "pretty good" left quad contusion.

Results from an MRI will be known on Sunday, but Yost seemed optimistic.

"You're always nervous, especially when you lose two All-Stars. You never want to lose a third," he said, adding that Cuthbert also suffered a contusion but is expected to be OK.

"We'll just see what the MRI shows. The good thing about it, as far as we can tell, there was no structural damage to his knee. That was what I was worried about."

Perez may still need to go on the 15-day disabled list, but his season should be salvaged.

The Royals are already short-handed with Mike Moustakas (knee) out for the season and Alex Gordon expected to miss close to a month with a fractured wrist, so getting Perez back soon will be important as they try to win games in a tough division.
