A second-half surge was enough for South Sydney Rabbitohs to see off St George Illawarra Dragons 34-24 for just their second NRL home win of the season on Thursday.

Tries from Jake Marketo and Tim Lafai complemented two efforts from Gareth Widdop's boot as the Dragons opened up a 12-4 lead, but the Rabbitohs led at the interval, Greg Inglis fed Dane Nielsen for a 33rd-minute score and Cody Walker chased down his own grubber kick to swing momentum in the hosts' favour just before the hooter.

A string of handling errors had limited the Rabbitohs' output in the first half and George Burgess' spill immediately after the restart suggested more was to come before his brother Sam was penalised, allowing Widdop to level the scores from the tee.

Kalifa Loa responded to Kyle Turner's try, but the Dragons were behind again 10 minutes later in controversial circumstances.

Josh Dugan chased a grubber behind his own whitewash and looked to touch down and secure a drop out under pressure from Paul Carter.

Carter appeared to land on Dugan's arm in his attempts to get hands on the ball, but video referees ruled that it amounted to enough downward pressure to award a try.

South Sydney effectively ended the contest six minutes from time as Bryson Goodwin crossed for the second time, boosting the hosts' top-eight hopes.
