The Miami Marlins have confirmed the death of star pitcher Jose Fernandez, following a boating accident.

Fernandez, 24, was one of three people found dead in the early hours of Sunday morning by the U.S. Coast Guard, after the boat they had been on overturned following an apparent collision with a jetty at the Government Cut shipping channel.

Speaking at a subsequent news briefing, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) public information officer Lorenzo Veloz said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash. He also stated there was no indication that alcohol or drugs had been involved, while none of the victims were wearing life vests.

In announcing the death of Fernandez, the Marlins confirmed their fixture against the Atlanta Braves, scheduled for Sunday, had been cancelled.

Fernandez was considered one the leading pitchers in baseball and had the promise of a great career ahead of him.

He was the Marlins' first-round draft pick in 2011, Rookie of the Year in 2013 and an All-Star in 2013 and 2016.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred added in a statement: "All of baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.

"He was one of our game's great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organisation and all of the people he touched in his life."
