Mike Hesson is confident New Zealand's "inexperienced, but gifted" spinners can trouble India in the three-match Test series.

The Black Caps arrived in India on Monday and start a three-day warm-up game against Mumbai on Friday, with the first of the Tests getting under way in Kanpur next Thursday.

New Zealand headed to the subcontinent on the back of a 1-0 series defeat in South Africa and face a major challenge against an India side full of confidence following three consecutive series triumphs.

Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner and Mark Craig will be aiming to make the most of spin-friendly conditions and head coach Hesson is backing the trio to make an impact.

"In the last couple of years, a number of overseas spinners have done well, so we certainly back our spinning group [which is] young and inexperienced, but gifted," Hesson said.

"The challenge for us is firstly in adjusting to the different ball - the SG Test [ball] is going to be completely different to what we have been operating with the Kookaburra.

"So, there is a little bit of change there, a little bit of changing around seam angles, which are different over here than they are in different parts of the world.

"Even though we are not going to bowl like subcontinental bowlers, we do have to make sure that we find a way to create opportunities. All those three are keen learners of the game and certainly we are going to put a lot of faith in them over the coming weeks."
