Penguins advance after shocking Capitals in game six

The Pittsburgh Penguins progressed to the third round of the NHL Stanley Cup play-offs after outlasting the Washington Capitals in OT of game six.

The Pittsburgh Penguins progressed to the third round of the NHL Stanley Cup play-offs after Nick Borino broke the Washington Capitals' hearts in overtime of game six on Tuesday.

Despite taking a three-goal lead, it took the Penguins until overtime to seal the 4-3 win as Pittsburgh earned an Eastern Conference finals showdown with the Tampa Bay Lightning via the 4-2 series victory.

The Penguins got off to the best possible start after a tense opening five minutes, hitting the front through Phil Kessel, who doubled the lead on a power play seven minutes into the second period.

Carl Hagelin scored 33 seconds later to put the Penguins 3-0 up and seemingly through to the third round of the post-season.

But the Capitals - the President's Cup winners as the best team in the regular season - were not ready to bow out just yet.

The fightback begun in earnest when T.J. Oshie scored his sixth goal of the play-offs with assists from Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin.

The third period was all Capitals, and Justin Williams ensured some nervy final minutes for the Penguins when he scored to make it 3-2 7:23 into the third.

And the Capitals ensured OT would take place when John Carlson levelled the scores with seven minutes remaining.

Overtime proved as frantic as regulation with forward Jay Beagle diving across his own goal-line to save a certain goal from Trevor Daley that would have sent the Capitals out of the play-offs.

But it was all in vein as the Penguins eventually found the back of the net through defender Bonino, who hung around the net to tuck away a simple rebound beyond Braden Holtby and send the Capitals packing.
