Top 25 Ghanaian footballers of the year

Pulse Sports brings you a list of the top 25 Ghanaian footballers who excelled in 2016

The year 2016 was, as has been the case in recent years, a very interesting one for Ghanaian football.

The Black Stars, still the subject of apathy from fans two years after the humiliating events of the World Cup in Brazil, continued to struggle. Out of 8 games in the year, Avram Grant's team won only twice. Indeed, they have failed to record a single win in their last five fixtures and are all but out of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, following a faulty start that involved a home draw to Uganda and an away loss to Egypt.

Their juniors had a mixed year: the Black Starlets (U-17) qualified for next year's Africa Cup, while the Black Satellites couldn't qualify for their own. It was an uneventful year for the Meteors (U-23), after their failure to qualify for Rio 2016.

The Ghana Premier League, meanwhile, saw a brand new champion: Wa All Stars became the 11th club to ascend the Ghanaian top flight throne in the league's 60 year history. They also became the first team from Ghana's three Northern Regions to become champions. The Division One League also saw the rise to prominence of Elmina Sharks and Bolga Stars, teams that will join good old Great Olympics as the three qualified teams for next season's league.

There were strides in women's football, with the Black Maidens (U-17) reaching the quarter final of the World Cup in Jordan, while their seniors, the Black Queens, picked up bronze medals at the Africa Women's Cup of Nations in Cameroon. The U-20 team, the Black Princesses, failed to progress from their Group at the World Cup in Papua New Guinea.

Through all of this action in the many facets of our football, the Pulse Sports team have compiled a list of 25 footballers who excelled this year.
