Australian Olympic gold medallist Sally Pearson is set to step up her return from a wrist injury in the coming weeks and is confident of being competitive at Rio 2016.

Pearson, who won gold in the 100-metre hurdles at the 2012 Games in London, has been sidelined since suffering a dislocation and a complex fracture of both the ulna and the radius in her left arm at a Diamond League meet in Rome in June.

The injury required surgery and forced the 29-year-old to sit out the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.

Despite only beginning to start jumping hurdles again with just over four months until the Games, Pearson is confident she can perform at the highest level.

"This week has been fantastic, I start hurdling next week, and I'm really looking forward to that," she told the ABC.

"My speed and volume in my running has really stepped up this week and I'm just relieved, more than anything, that everything's coming together.

"I don't think when I start hurdling that I'm going to be scared, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can achieve, getting back into competition.

"I just want to get the first race out of the way, I think the first race will definitely be in Australia, before I leave in about 10 or 11 weeks' time to head overseas.

"Finally, it's all coming together and I'm really looking forward to the season - my confidence has lifted dramatically, I still believe I can go to these Olympics and be really competitive."
