Shane Watson has confirmed his Australia career will come to end after the World Twenty20.

The 34-year-old all-rounder confirmed on Thursday that he will call time on his playing days at international level after the tournament in India.

Watson made his Australia debut in a one-day international against South Africa 14 years ago and has gone on to play 305 times for his country across all three formats.

But the medium-pacer and aggressive batsman feels the time has come to finish his long international career.

"It's been over the last week that it has really become clear that now really is the right time to retire from all international cricket," said Watson.

"I've been playing with the thought for a few months now with the way the group is continuing to evolve, which is exciting to be able to see. With my young family as well and seeing the potential of the international schedule is very hectic.

"And I just know it's the right time to be able to right now clear my mind knowing that I've made the decision and be absolutely ready to go for these next two very important games."

Watson will be aiming to sign off in style, with Australia knowing victories over Pakistan on Friday and hosts India two days later will ensure they join New Zealand in qualifying for the semi-finals from Group 2.

He has made 14 centuries for his country in all formats and taken 289 wickets.
