The San Jose Sharks moved into the NHL Stanley Cup final for the first time in franchise history following a 5-2 rout of the St Louis Blues in game six on Wednesday.

The Sharks played the Blues off the ice for the majority of the contest, with Joel Ward scoring a double either side of goals from Joe Pavelski, Joonas Donskoi and Logan Couture.

Vladimir Tarasenko struck twice for the Blues in the third period but it proved too little too late as the Sharks sealed their NHL Western Conference final series 4-2.

Pavelski added to his two goals from game five just three minutes, 57 seconds of the first period at the SAP Center in San Jose.

Ward scored the first of his two goals five minutes into the second period, before making it 3-0 to the Sharks early in the third.

Off-season recruit Donskoi put daylight between the two sides by scoring the Sharks' fourth, but the Blues did not go down that easy.

Tarasenko found some form in the closing stages, scoring twice to bring the deficit back to two, but Couture scored into an empty net in the final minute of regulation time to round out the result.

The Sharks will now await the series-deciding game seven between Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday to find out their Stanley Cup final opponent.
