South Africa have drafted Lwazi Mvovo and Francois Hougaard into a 28-man squad to travel Down Under for Rugby Championship fixtures against Australia and New Zealand.

The Springboks opened the competition with a 30-23 win over Argentina in Nelspruit but were then defeated by the Pumas last time out, going down 26-24 in Salta courtesy of a late Santiago Iglesias penalty.

A meeting with the winless Wallabies is next up for coach Allister Coetzee, whose hand in selection has been forced by injuries to Ruan Combrinck (fractured leg) and Elton Jantjies, who will travel with the team despite a bruised thigh.

Mvovo was named in Coetzee's initial training squad ahead of the competition, while Hougaard is back in contention after helping the Blitzboks to a bronze medal in rugby sevens at Rio 2016.

"Losing Ruan is a setback for us, but injuries are part of the game and it's good for us to be able to call on experienced players such as Lwazi and Francois," said Coetzee.

"We are not happy with where we find ourselves after the first two matches of the campaign. Australia will pose an even tougher challenge and it is important that we deliver a much-improved performance in Brisbane."
