Wellington won the inaugural Jonah Lomu Memorial Trophy with a last-gasp 48-metre penalty from Jackson Garden-Bachop securing a 28-27 victory over Counties Manukau in the Mitre 10 Cup.

Garden-Bachop became the first Wellington player to kick seven penalties in a single match in last weekend's 21-17 home win over North Harbour, and he proved crucial again on Friday with an 18-point display.

Visitors Wellington took the lead through Leni Apisai, but a double from Luteru Laulala sent Counties Manukau into half-time with a 17-11 lead.

Apisai touched down for his second of the night before Kalolo Tuiloma hit back, and Garden-Bachop then scored and converted his own try to close the gap to two points with 12 minutes remaining.

Garden-Bachop completed the turnaround after the clock had ticked past 80 minutes with a superb kick as Wellington made it back-to-back wins and took the trophy commemorating the life of All Blacks great Lomu, who represented both clubs.

Bay of Plenty secured their first win of the season in emphatic fashion, beating Northland 52-25 in Rotorua.

Jesse Parete and Joe Tupe touched down twice each as Bay of Plenty ran in eight tries, one of which was awarded by referee Michael Lash after Shane Neville was ruled to have impeded a lineout maul.
