Tigers end skid as Fulmer stars, Blue Jays sweep Yankees
Michael Fulmer flirted with a no-hitter as the Detroit Tigers snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 3-0 shutout of the Los Angeles Angels in MLB.
Fulmer did not concede a hit through 6.2 innings before C.J. Cron's single, eventually ending the match with just over seven shutout innings in Los Angeles.
The Toronto Blue Jays also had a shut out win, blitzing the New York Yankees 7-0 for a series sweep.
But perhaps the biggest storyline came out of Camden Yards, where the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles were putting up video-game numbers, with the latter prevailing 13-9.
Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts hit home runs in his first two at-bats for the second straight game to give him five home runs in seven at-bats. Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts also extended his hit streak to 25 games.
However the offensive punch from Betts, who finished two for three with a pair of walks, was not enough for Boston.
The Chicago White Sox made it back-to-back wins over the New York Mets via a 2-1 victory, taking out the three-game series in the process, while the Chicago Cubs were too good for the Los Angeles Dodgers by the same scoreline.
World Series champions the Kansas City Royals defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3, the Atlanta Braves stunned the San Francisco Giants 5-4, the Milwaukee Brewers saw off the St Louis Cardinals 3-1, the Houston Astros overcame the Arizona Diamondbacks in 5-4 walk-off victory, the Oakland Athletics beat the Minnesota Twins 5-1 and the Colorado Rockies went down 7-2 to the Cincinnati Reds.
The Cleveland Indians trumped the Texas Rangers 5-4, the Washington Nationals were 7-2 winners against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Miami Marlins prevailed 3-2 over the Pittsburgh Pirates, while the San Diego Padres trounced the Seattle Mariners 14-6.
FULMER DAZZLES FOR TIGERS
Fulmer took a no-hitter into the seventh inning until Cron hit a two-out single. The only other hit Fulmer allowed in 7.2 innings was a two-out double by Gregorio Petit in the eighth. The 23-year-old struck out eight and walked two while lowering his ERA to 3.24.
ALBERS ENDS DROUGHT IN DRAMATIC FASHION
Matt Albers is not exactly swift of foot, but the hefty White Sox reliever had quite an eventful two-inning appearance to get the win over the Mets after 13-inning marathon. Albers had his first hit since 2007 and his first at-bat since 2009.
BOGAERTS' STREAK GOES ON
Bogaerts went one for five to extend his hitting streak to 25 games. Coupled with the 29-game hit streak turned in by Jackie Bradley Jr, Bogaerts and Bradley became just the third team-mates over the last 75 years to have hit streaks of at least 25 games in the same season.
CUBS LOOK TO CLAIM DODGERS SERIES
After three games, the Cubs are won win away from taking out their series at home to the Dodgers. Kyle Hendricks (3-4, 2.93 ERA), who tossed a complete game against the Phillies in his last outing, will start for the Cubs on Thursday. The Dodgers will send out Julio Urias (0-0, 10.13 ERA) for his second MLB outing. Meanwhile, fans will be hoping for more of the same when the Orioles and Red Sox lock horns again.
