J.D. Martinez was the difference in Detroit on Wednesday, hitting a go-head, pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning to help extend the Tigers' winning streak.

Back in action after missing six weeks due to a fractured elbow, Martinez hit Chris Sale to left-centre field at Comerica Park.

The Baltimore Orioles continued their fine form on home soil, edging the Texas Rangers 3-2.

Kevin Gausman allowed two runs and struck out seven in seven innings as the Orioles improved to 39-16 in Baltimore.

The Orioles have only dropped two series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards this season.

Reigning World Series champions the Kansas City Royals were humbled 12-0 by the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Washington Nationals swept the Arizona Diamondbacks with an 8-3 victory.

The Colorado Rockies hit five homers as they powered past the Los Angeles Dodgers 12-2, the San Diego Padres crushed the Milwaukee Brewers 12-3, the Minnesota Twins accounted for the Cleveland Indians 13-5,  and the New York Yankees trumped the New York Mets 9-5 thanks to Mark Teixeira's three-run homer.

Josh Donaldson helped the Toronto Blue Jays to a 3-1 win against the Houston Astros, the Seattle Mariners beat the Boston Red Sox by the same scoreline, the Chicago Cubs outlasted the Miami Marlins 5-4, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost 8-4 to the Atlanta Braves, the St Louis Cardinals edged the Cincinnati Reds 5-4, the San Francisco Giants fell 5-4 to the Philadelphia Phillies, while the Los Angeles Angels prevailed 8-6 against the Oakland Athletics.

Connecting on two doubles and two singles, veteran hitter Joe Mauer plated four as the Twins rocked Cleveland yet again. Cleveland starters after three games in Minnesota have allowed 21 runs on 23 hits with nine walks in just over eight innings.

SCHEBLER PRODUCES SHOW-STOPPING CATCH

Reds outfielder Scott Schebler made an amazing leaping catch at the right-field wall to rob Cardinals' Jedd Gyorko of a home run. Unfortunately for the Reds on the very next pitch, Stephen Piscotty hit a moon shot to left field.

STRONG FINISHING MARLINS FINALLY COME UNSTUCK, MURPHY HOMERS

The Marlins were 53-0 this season when leading entering the ninth inning until their loss to the Cubs. Marlins closer A.J. Ramos allowed three runs on two hits while recording just two outs and threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded for a Cubs walk-off win.

After being named the National League (NL) Player of the Month, Nationals slugger Daniel Murphy hit his 21st homer of the season in an 8-3 win over the Diamondbacks. He had 23 long balls in 2014-2015 combined.

TIGERS GOING FOR NINTH SUCCESSIVE WIN

Detroit's Jordan Zimmermann (9-4, 3.95 ERA) returns from the disabled list (neck) on Thursday after missing all of July. The right-hander beat the White Sox twice in June but will likely be on a pitch count his first time back. Jose Quintana (8-8, 2.89 ERA) looks to stay hot after finishing July with a 3-0 record and 1.95 ERA.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, are back in action at the Mariners, firmly in the thick of the wildcard race.
