Stan Wawrinka unconcerned by ankle problem

During his victory over Dan Evans at the US Open, Stan Wawrinka had to have his ankle taped, but he does not envisage long-term issues.

Stan Wawrinka is not concerned about the ankle problem he sustained during his five-set victory over Dan Evans at the US Open.

Wawrinka appeared to roll his ankle while chasing down an Evans forehand in the second set of Saturday's epic encounter and had to have the joint taped.

The world number three staved off a match point before going on to secure his place in the fourth round, where he will face Illya Marchenko.

Wawrinka is accustomed to ankle problems but does not anticipate any lingering issues as his campaign continues.

"It's not the first time that I twist my ankle in match," said the Swiss.

"It was painful in the moments, but after the pain went out, I just wanted to check and change the tape because that was the most important.

"It's because of the tape that I don't completely kill the ankle. I didn't feel any pain during the match or after, so that was okay."

Windy conditions threw Wawrinka slightly, and he was pleased to have come out on top in a testing encounter.

"It wasn't easy to stay calm with myself, but in general I think that was the key for the match," he added.

"[It] was tough conditions, windy against a talented player who is playing really well, who was pushing me a lot. He was coming with the right shot in the right moment.

"The court was a little bit faster than normal … so I'm happy to get through. It's an important win for me."
