I have President Mahama’s backing to revive Ghana Sports

Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, the Sports Minister says he has the full support of the President of the Republic of Ghana in his quest to revive Ghana sports

Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has made several attempts to change the way things are done in sports in the country.

His public utterances have created tension between the Sports Ministry and the Ghana Football Association (GFA), especially with regards to funding of the national football teams.

Most sector ministers in charge of sports in the past don’t get enough time to implement their ideologies before they are reshuffled, but Nii Lantey Vanderpuye believes he has the support of the President to enact his ideas.

“Let me be frank with you - I have the full support of His Excellency, the President. Whenever I encounter a problem, he always come to my aid, even when Black Maidens issue came up, I run to him and called the finance Minister to sort out things," he told Nhyira FM.

“I don’t think all Ministers get that opportunity. Sometimes he gives me the chance to visit his home and discuss some of the things I want to undertake and after explaining to him he throws his weight behind me to go and accomplish them.

“I thank God for getting it that way and I am saying if that continues for the next four years, you will pay money to look for me, because I promise Ghanaians that we are going to change sports in this country.

“I am telling you, it is not that I am bragging, the God that I serve has given me the knowledge that tenacity. I will always go to President Mahama and after that he will tell me you have my full backing continue with what you are doing."

He added that he has also has the support of Asantehene and the people of Ghana.

“I thank Asantehene for his support- he calls to encourage me that he is behind what I am doing, the people of Asante are also behind me. If I am doing what the people of Ghana like, that is source of my joy and I don’t care what the people around me would say.”
