Super League: Sheens to leave Salford for Hull KR

Super League: Tim Sheens to swap Salford Red Devils for Hull KR from 2017 to fulfil a desire for a more hands-on role.

Tim Sheens will leave his position as director of rugby at Salford Red Devils to become head coach at Hull KR on a three-year contract from next season.

Sheens is a coach of great pedigree, having steered Australia to the 2013 Rugby League World Cup trophy and led Canberra Raiders to three NRL Grand Final wins.

The 65-year-old also took Wests Tigers to a Premiership triumph in 2005 and helmed New South Wales Blues in the 1991 State of Origin series against Queensland Maroons.

Sheens will take charge of Rovers in 2017 regardless of how they fare in the Super League Qualifiers and is looking forward to working closely with the players in his new role.

"The decision to leave Salford was not easy but my passion has always been to coach and so I thank Hull KR for such an opportunity," Sheens told Hull's official website.

"I'd also like to thank [Salford owner] Marwan Koukash for giving me the chance to work in Super League.

"Given that the current competition is still in progress, for me it's business as usual with [Salford head coach] Ian [Watson] and the team at Salford before I take up my new post at Hull KR."

Hull chairman Neil Hudgell said Sheens will play a role in grooming a successor, working closely with head of rugby Jamie Peacock, who this week came out of retirement to help the club's survival bid.

"Tim is a proven winner and hugely experienced at both club and international level. He is strong on discipline and culture, whilst his profile within the sport and connections back in Australia will boost recruitment," said Hudgell.

"His appointment is the second piece in the jigsaw within our five-year plan and he'll work closely alongside Jamie Peacock at the club.

"Part of Tim's remit here will be to help nurture another head coach to take over when he leaves to give us the platform and continuity we need.

"Given the current situation the two clubs are in with the Super 8s qualifiers, it wouldn't be appropriate to comment further at this stage."

It has been reported that Sheens could stand down from his duties at Salford prematurely should they meet Hull in the Million Pound Game, but no official confirmation has been supplied.
